This permanent full-time position also offers the opportunity to work with both fine contemporary and rare antique instruments, collaborating closely with elite musicians and collectors. As the company expands its restoration services to meet the growing demand for expert work on historic instruments and bows, we are looking for a Violin Maker with extensive international experience and proven mastery in restoration. The successful candidate will also have the ability to lead workshop operations to the highest standards, mentor junior staff, and make a meaningful contribution to Canada’s professional music community through care of a select portfolio of fine instruments and bows. • Position: Violin Repairer (NOC 73209) • Vacancies: One (1) • Terms of employment: Permanent, Full-time • Compensation: $37.00 – 40.00 per hour • Working hours: 30-40 hours per week • Benefits: 4 % of vacation pay Job Duties • Examine violins and other stringed instruments thoroughly to identify issues requiring repair or adjustment. • Independently repair and restore professional-grade violins, violas, and cellos using traditional Cremonese methods. • Perform complex restorations on fine contemporary and historically significant antique instruments, including those by renowned makers such as Stradivari, Guarneri, Amati, and related schools. • Utilize advanced restoration techniques including soundpost and bass bar patching, neck and scroll grafts, repair of broken or deformed violin tops, backplate soundpost crack repairs, and sensitive varnish retouching to preserve instrument integrity and aesthetics. • Execute expert-level bow rehairing and restoration on historically important bows by makers such as Tourte, Peccatte, Simon, Voirin, and Sartory. • Conduct precise tonal adjustments tailored to the needs of elite soloists, chamber musicians, and orchestral leaders, ensuring consistency and optimal performance after setup and restoration. • Collaborate closely with professional performers and artistic consultants to understand and achieve desired tonal preferences and functional objectives. • Oversee and maintain a rotating collection of fine instruments and bows, ensuring optimal preservation, performance readiness, and accurate documentation of condition. • Authenticate instruments and bows by providing expert consultation and detailed condition reports, assisting clients with high-value acquisitions and insurance documentation. • Supervise and mentor junior luthiers and makers, providing guidance on setup, repair work, and quality control to uphold workshop standards. • Maintain meticulous records of all procedures, materials used, and client communications to support internal quality control and external audits. • Manage workshop tools and equipment, ensuring safety standards are met and all are maintained in excellent working condition. Work Conditions & Suitability • Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities: Attention to detail, Hand-eye co-ordination, Fast-paced environment • Personal Suitability: Client focus, Organized, Reliability Requirements • Other trades certificate or diploma from a recognized violin making and repair program required (graduation from institutions with a strong tradition in European or North American craftsmanship preferred) • Minimum 5 years of professional experience as a violin and other string instrument repairer, including extensive restoration of antique instruments. • Proven expertise in advanced repair techniques such as soundpost and bass bar patching, neck and scroll grafts, repair of broken or deformed violin tops, backplate soundpost cracks, sensitive varnish retouching, and tailored tonal adjustments for elite soloists, chamber musicians, and orchestral leaders. • Portfolio of previous restoration work required, including detailed documentation of restorations on high-value or historically significant instruments (e.g., Stradivarius, Guarneri, Amati) and bows (e.g., Tourte, Peccatte, Sartory, Simon), with photo documentation recommended. • Submission of a cover letter or short written reflection on restoration philosophy and tonal work encouraged. • Provision of references attesting to professional experience from former clients, institutions, or senior colleagues required. • Letter of recommendation may be included but not mandatory. • Link to a web portfolio or copy of relevant work examples is advised if available. • Specify highest level of education and the name of the institution where completed. • Reliable, detail-focused, excellent time management and organizational skills.
